Tuesday 26th April 2011

Today was Ollie's first day at daycare (*sob*).

Breakfast was porridge, which Ollie ate a bit of, but did have straight after his milk feed.

Lunch was at daycare.. and I forgot what it was, but involved cauliflower and rice. Apparently Ollie did well (and made a mess if his pants are any indicator) and ate about a third of his portion! Which would  be some kind of amazing if the portion size was similar to the day I went. Maybe the teacher was including the floor sacrifice in his eaten? I was so happy to see him, I wasn't too worried about food.

Ollie also had afternoon tea for the first time ever! The teacher said he was a bit grizzly so she thought he might be hungry so she gave him a cruskit and something (the proper afternoon tea wasn't ready yet).

Dinner was a bit of a rush.. we had Fish and Chips. Ollie had some fish and some chips, and a banana biscotti! He was so cute, laughing and smiling. At the end of the meal, we skyped Nelson grandma .

Sunday 24th, Monday 25th April 2011

Hmmm lazy Easter weekend!

Breakfast.. hot cross buns, porridge, pineapple....

Lunch.. Sunday we had spinach and cheese muffins and feijoas. Yummo. Monday we were at Dad's - Ollie had lamb kofta leftovers, biscotti, and pineapple.

Dinner... Dahl on Sunday night - was a hit. Ollie had his with pita bread. And David cooked it perfectly this time! Ollie didn't get dinner on Monday night. We were at Dad's til late (loong story) so by the time he got home, he just had a good milk feed and then bed!

Saturday 23rd April 2010

Breakfast.. hot cross buns! and mini wheats! Lunch... rusks with cream cheese (Farex mixed in) and pineapple.
Can you tell we are having a lazy Easter weekend? Both meals Ollie ate well - sucking the cream cheese of the rusks, and off a spork! Again, loving the pineapple!

Dinner.. lamb kofta cooked by my darling husband (baked not fried) with steamed cauliflower and carrot. Ollie had a great meal, ate lots. More vege than kofta as the meat took a wee while to cool down. At the end of the meal we used the laptop to skype Ollie's grandparents in Nelson so we could show off his eating! He was obviously distracted, but did continue to eat a bit while the laptop was on. It was cool for the grandies to see him munching away!

(Good) Friday 22nd April 2011

Breakfast.. porridge! and pear! Ollie had a good feed, he munched a lot. Into his mouth and pyjamas!

Lunch was AWESOME! Being Good Friday, we were at David's parents. I took Ollie some lunch - fruit, biscotti, and cream cheese. Ollie started off with the pineapple and LOVED it again. He chewed away sucking all the juice out. Then we gave him half a hot cross bun, and he was so cute! He really enjoyed it! We also threw some biscotti into the mix and he had a really good time. Lots of eating, and not really distracted by eating in a noisy room full of people (on the floor on his mat! haha)

I did get a fabric highchair thing, than can go around a chair or person (or a bed for sleeping). I haven't used it yet, I think it will be most useful for cafes and places where we can't sit on the floor.

Dinner was reheated macaroni cheese and steamed vege. Ollie was pretty tired, but he did so well! Well steamed courgette and capsicum are so easy for him to eat, he just sucks/chews the flesh from the skin.

Wednesday 20th April 2011

Breakfast... Mango Pear and Biscotti. (Can you tell I was having a lazy morning?)

Lunch at Grandmas... Mango Pear and Biscotti (sound familar)

Dinner .. fish fingers, capsicum broccoli and green beans. Ollie got stuck into everything even the fish! woo! Maybe because he was glad it wasn't the same as breakfast and lunch?

Thursday 21st April

Another great food day today!

Breakfast was porridge which got everywhere, all over Ollie's pyjamas! He loves smooshing it, but eats a lot too. We also had good ol' pear!

Lunch was interesting! I was out for lunch with friends, so took a few items with me for Ollie. we went to a Satay Noodle House! Ollie started with biscotti and then got REALLY stuck into my satay chicken. I found a decent sized piece of chicken and couldn't get it off him! Was awesome, and a great ad for BLW! I also gave him some noodle, mushroom, but it was allll about the chicken. The rice was too separated for him to pick up. Pretty cool though, he was loving it!

Dinner was all wrong because I forgot to put the crockpot on! So we had macaroni cheese. Ollie got stuck in, and he also had some pear!

I'm so proud of my boy!

Tuesday 19th April 2011

Breakfast today was mini wheats and pear. Ollie didn't eat a huge amount, but had a big milk feed beforehand so probably wasn't too hungry.

Lunch was at childcare, part of the settling process. It was tomatoey pasta (penne) with veges - broccoli and peas. It was VERY distracting for Ollie, with all the other kids eating, but he did OK. Picked up the pasta and broccoli OK, but I don't think much went down. The broccoli was only the small florets, no stalk, so I was pleased he got it OK. He seemed to recognise it, as he loves broccoli. Wasn't cooked til mushy stage, so too crunchy, but he probably got some wee bits. He did chew off at least one piece of pasta though... I saw it in his mouth half an hour later when we were on our way home!! I'll have to ask them to check his cheeks I think...

Dinner was boooring. Chicken with steamed vege. Ollie ignored the chicken, but did eat his vege, mainly the red capsicum and carrot.

Ollie is starting childcare next week. I'm so not ready.

Monday 18th April 2011

I dislike Mondays. David goes back to work, and I can see all the housework I DIDN'T do over the weekend waiting for me. On the upside, Monday is shopping day, which I usually enjoy! Anyway, I digress..

I finally got a proper meal plan sorted for this week! I've deviated from it already, but a good plan does help. Breakfast was avocado on toast, and banana. Good effort by Ollie, into both the toast and the banana! Seemed to eat a lot in comparison to a couple of weeks ago. It is really hard to guage as it ends up in pieces. Perhaps I should try putting his meal back together like a jigsaw piece! haha.

Lunch was a roaring success too. Piklets with cream cheese, and feijoa. This time I cut the feijoa lengthways and ollie was easily able to pick it up and eat it. He LOVED it! He enjoyed sucking the cream cheese off before munching on the piklet. I really can't get over how much he loved the feijoa. None of his usual noises, just "suck suck suck" as he ate it. And of course, the biscotti was a favourite again! I gave it to him after the piklet and feijoa. Ollie talked to it few minutes before eating though... "I'm going to eat you now... and you are going to taste gooooood.... eeegughhaaaaa ba waaa".

I tend to refill Ollie's plate as the pieces get too small, so he has a good selection of food. So, if he runs out of piklet, I'll give him another. I think this has led to him ignoring the smaller pieces, knowing he'll get another "big" bit. Obviously he needs to practice his fine motor skills, so I'm going to make an effort to leave him with the "small" bits. I know he can manage them, they are just a bit trickier.

Dinner went really well too, despite being a bit late. (Ollie and I got stuck out in traffic). Chicken stirfry. Ollie mainly only ate the chicken as it was first on his tray. But I did see him munching on capsicum, courgette, and broccoli. It was the first time I've seen Ollie eat chicken, he normally ignores it. He loooved it! Lots of munching and definitely swallowing! woohoo!

taggy tag

So I was looking at my tags, aka all the food Ollie has eaten/been offered, and I realised that the few days here and there that I've missed posting have meant a few things left out. So this post is purely to add a few tags :)

On the pineapple... Ollie tried that at a coffee group catch up. While it was too hard for him to chew and swallow, he really enjoyed sucking on it and gumming it. It was just a wedge, and he spent a bit of time chewing on the skin too. I bought a pineapple with the fruit and vege this week so we'll give it another go. I'm sure I read somewhere it is good to leave skin on things like pineapple, as it helps them learn which are the edible bits of food.

Sunday 17th April

Breakfast.. porridge again! Made it super chunky again, seems to work best if I use half rice milk and half water. I didn't put grated apple in it this time, we were pushed for time. Ollie didn't seem to notice. We also had the end of our mango.. yum yum! Ollie really loves mango, and if it is nice and ripe, he can eat a fair bit.

Lunch was leftover meatballs and leftover cheese and lentil slice. And Feijoa! He really got into all of it and seemed to eat a fair bit! He liked the feijoa, and sucked out the juicy centre, and spat out the harder edge bit. He needed a bit of help to get it to his mouth though.

Stirfry for dinner. Ollie was so so tired (we really need to address his extreme tiredness at the end of the day! he won't have an afternoon nap, but struggles to make it to bedtime) but he still had a good go at his stirfry, particularly the beef!

All in all, a very successful food day!

Saturday 16th April 2011

Breakfast - thicker porridge (again with grated apple)! Ollie was able to pick up with his hands and eat! We had to rush off to swimming so nothing else for breakfast.

Lunch was cheese and lentil slice. Recipe out of the baby led weaning cookbook, and I'd been meaning to try it for a while. It was sooo yummy! Ollie loved it too. I think I cooked it a little too long, because it was quite crumbly. Might try another egg, and less cooking time next time. We also had mango for lunch... yum yum!

Dinner was meatballs baked in the oven (they were more like meat sticks!) while David and I thought they were yummo.. Ollie was tooo tired by the time they cooled. He did have a good helping of beans, capsicum and broccoli though! There are some leftover, so I think we'll have them for lunch tomorrow.

Friday 15th April 2011

We tried porridge today! Was very messy! But also very fun. I took a photo so it might turn up on the main blog. I think Oliver actually ate a fair bit of porridge! Eating with his fingers didn't work so well, he kept shaking his hand like he had poo stuck to it... So, I tried pre-loading a spoon and giving him that. He took off at that point, (with me helping raise the spoon a bit) but still has some way to go before he can handle a spoon prperly himself. I'll try making porridge thicker next time I think.

Lunch was pretty funny! We had tuna patties (with lemon and thyme). The texture and shape of the patties was perfect and Ollie really enjoyed munching on them. The funny part came when he would just open his mouth and let the chewed bit roll of his tongue. It was as if he all of a sudden didn't like it. But, he'd put the pattie back in his mouth, have another bite... and repeat! He thought it was pretty hilarious. We also had banana biscotti (high iron baby version) and Ollie loved it! I can see that is going to be a regular at lunchtime. (David and I think it is pretty yum too!)

Dinner was tofu sticks and steamed vege. Steamed vege was yum, but I wasn't a fan of the tofu! Apparently you can give it to them raw, but it seemed odd, so I lightly dusted in flour and pan fried. I prefer my tofu in curry. Ollie seemed relatively interested in it, but didn't eat a huge amount as it seemed too firm. There must be another way I can cook it.. perhaps oven bake?

Thursday 14th April 2011

Whoops. Missed a few days again. Where do the days go?? This is why I need an iphone!  I can't even remember what we had for breakfast or lunch today!

Dinner was meatloaf with steamed veges - kumara, broccoli, and carrot. Ollie seemed to eat quite a bit. As usual, loved the broccoli. Veges were really soft so he was easily able to eat heaps. Meatloaf was quite crumbly so it was hard to see how much went down, but there was a heck of a mess to clean up afterward!

One of our current challenges is Ollie "losing" his food down the side of his highchair. We used to lock him in with rolled up towels, but there isn't a need anymore, but his seat gets covered in food. (and so does his clothes!) He likes to put his sippy cup next to him on the seat - that's how much room there is! Not sure how we are going to solve this one.

Monday 11th April 2011

Where is the month going? I'm back at work in three weeks (sob) so Ollie is in daycare two days a week beginning 26th April. Haven't yet worked out how the food thing is going to work. We aren't allowed to take our own food - they have an in house chef. I assume to avoid allergies/sharing issues.

Breakfast.. avocado (mixed with baby rice) on toast, mini wheats, pear. Toast was the top favourite today, Ollie really got into it. Seems to be a bit over the mini wheats, though does give them a go if they are first on the tray and there is a delay in something else. Even pear wasn't as popular as usual. Ollie seemed to eat a fair bit of avocado and toast which was good.

Lunch... piklets... with baby rice for iron. (I eat a lot of baby rice). I spread a wee bit of cream cheese on Ollie's piklets. Not only did he suck the cream cheese off, but I think he actually ate a fair bit of piklet! Also had second half of pear from this morning, but Ollie wasn't really into it.

Dinner.. macaroni cheese. Busy day, Ollie not really interested in eating much. Did enjoy sucking on the pasta.

Sunday 10th April 2011

Great food day today! Daddy did breakfast (mummy had a sleep in!) which was mini wheats and pear. According to David, Oliver ate at least half a mini wheat and a bit of pear (which sounds like nothing, but in the early days of BLW that is pretty good I think!)

Lunch we had at a cafe with his beautiful aunties Kate & Scone. Cheese toastie, rusk with cream cheese, and banana. Banana went pretty much straight on the floor (and I wasn't giving it back). Cream cheese was sucked off rusk (as usual). Toastie was interesting.. I cut it into short soliders and he sucked on them for most of the time we were eating. White bread, so hard to chew up, but bits definitely went down with all the sucking!

Dinner was Lamb Kofta (recipe provided by university study resources). And wow, it was a hit. Kofta straight to mouth, lots of chewing and sucking. Also had steamed kumara, carrot, and broccoli which he really got into, it was nice and mushy so easy for him to pass around his mouth. Definitely got kofta and veges down. He was really funny, cracking up towards the end of the meal, with a beautiful smile on his face.

I've decided to post any pics over on our main blog and just use this as a food diary. Saves posting them twice, and I figure no one actually reads this anyway (except maybe mum).  Main blog here .

Saturday 9th April 2011

Breakfast.. mini wheats and pear! Of course! I'm working on more varied breakfasts!

Lunch was at Nana & Poppa's so we took some french toast and avocado (mixed with baby rice for iron) to have on rusks). Oliver wasn't too distracted (it was just the two of us at the table) but he made quite a mess! Ate lots of avocado and some french toast!

Dinner was pork chops. I was hoping he could hold onto the chop and chew, but the chops I got were the wrong shape for that! Still, he loved the pork, he had a stray bit in his mouth that we was chewing en route to shower. We now have a cheek checkpoint in the shower every night!

We've got proper (but short still) little teeth through now, the two bottom ones. It will be interesting to see how that affects our mealtimes!

Friday 8th April 2011

Dinner tonight was curry! Real curry from the local indian place! We had Malai Kofta and Lamb Korma. The Kofta was too soft and Oliver totally ignored the lamb, but he LOVED pita bread dipped in the Malai Kofta sauce! What a hit! Didn't eat too much, but hopefully next time he'll have a go at the meat too!

Thursday 7th April 2011

Still recovering from our colds here!!

Breakfast, mini wheats and pear. Ollie really getting into pear lately! He loooves it. Its hard to think a few weeks ago it was too slippery to hold!

Lunch... pita pocket with cream cheese (and baby rice mixed in), cucumber. Cucumber is another favourite at the moment (I think it helps with the teeth too!)

Dinner.. Chicken drumsticks, with steamed carrot and broccoli, mashed potato. The chicken was cooked in the crockpot, so really fell off the bone. Ollie had quite a good go, except the mash... He was very very tired.

My super amazing meal plan didn't go so well this week.. our oven  (brand new) has stopped working. Thank god the stove still works. hopefully gets fixed next week!

Sunday 3rd April 2011

Woohoo BREAKFAST! We had mini wheats (best find ever - I must thank the mum that put me on to them!) with rice milk, and pear. Ollie had a really good go at the mini wheat and for the first time ever loved the pear! Normally he just ignores pear, and I was close to giving it up but today he got right into it. It was quite ripe (another tip from the same mum) which I think helped.

Lunch was a bit of a drama.. we went to Grandma and Grandads, but left Ollie's lunch box at home! whoops! We scraped together a banana, plum, and teething rusks with cream cheese. I guess my super iron rich piklets will be good for lunch tomorrow! Ollie really enjoyed his banana and for the first time ever he managed to eat some of the rusk (cream cheese everywhere!) I think the TEETH coming through really helped, as it looked like he was scraping the rusk on his teeth! They aren't really teeth - just little pointy tops of teeth - both bottom ones!

Dinner... meatloaf from last night and steamed capsicum and beans. Ollie was way tired and not into it. I was really hoping he would like meatloaf as his dad loves it!

And just because there has been no Ollie pics on here for a bit....

Saturday 2nd April

We did intend to start breakfast today with Ollie, but that extra 15mins in bed, listening to Ollie chatter to himeself meant it didn't quite happen. Was worth it though! And we went swimming, which was awesome!

The pesky bottom tooth is still working its way through, it doesn't appear to be of any use yet, but is causing our wee boy lots of pain!

Lunch - Blackcurrant mini wheats with a splash of rice milk, carrot muffin, and banana. Was really surprised how well he dealt with the mini wheats! And he hadn't had a carrot muffin for a while (they tend to be messy) and he handled the small pieces really well  - and chewed much better than he used to! Impressed. Banana.. well he was a bit over it by that point, but it was fun to throw around!

Dinner... supposed to be meatloaf.. but our timing was out! Saves cooking tomorrow night I guess!  So, we ended up with pasta, broccoli, capscium, and carrot. Ollie was on form, depsite being really tired. Had a good go at everything. He bites off chunks of everything, and mulls them around his mouth for a while. Some go down, but most go out!

Stop reading now if you don't want to read about poop. Today's nappy showed that we are definitely eating and "processing"more we are getting changes... and of course still lumps of non-processed food. No longer just breastmilk poop that is for sure!

Friday 1st April 2011

Lunch... cream cheese with baby rice, using capsicum, carrot -raw, cucumber, pita pocket as dippers.
Dinner ... cottage pie with steamed kumara and carrot. Didn't get into the cottage pie - a bit difficult I think. If we keep offering eventually he'll be able to pick it up! :) Or use cutlery!

Ollie had a few days where he didn't eat so much.. but we have a tooth coming! It has started to cut, which has made for a very unhappy boy. I need to remind myself it isn't about the volume and is quite normal to have a few off days!  I've done a meal plan that loosely includes lunch and breakfast to try and make me more organised so we don't have toast everyday! I've got lots of muffin recipes so we'll see how it goes.

He has definitely come along with his fine motor skills! Not quite managing the pincer grip, but getting there - using two fingers and thumb to pick up smaller bits of food.
