Wednesday 27th April 2011

Breakfast... was too soon after Ollie's milk feed and he just wasn't interested. Didn't even pick anything up. I was surprised, as I didn't think he associated food with hunger yet...

I did try breakfast again after his nap (he went straight to bed after the failed breakfast) but I  had a porridge diaster so I gave up and gave him his milk feed a bit early.

Lunch was interesting! We had tuna patties and pear. Ollie didn't seem to love the patties, but did eat some. Then I gave him pear, quartered as usual. He ate nearly a whole pear! I couldn't believe it. He got quite grumpy when only a teeny (pea sized) bit was left of each bit, but was quickly placated when I gave him another bit. Before I knew it, the whole pear was gone. He then had another go at his smooshed tuna patties, picking up quite small pieces and sucking them into his mouth.

I do believe we have turned an eating corner! Now I think I need to make sure there is an easy food with EVERY meal as he will start to rely on calories etc. from his solids. After the seemingly successful lunch at daycare yesterday, I am very optimistic!

Dinner was butter chicken! Ollie loved it, couldn't pick up the rice, but really enjoyed the butter chicken (made from scratch, finished in the crockpot).

Tuesday 26th April 2011

Today was Ollie's first day at daycare (*sob*).

Breakfast was porridge, which Ollie ate a bit of, but did have straight after his milk feed.

Lunch was at daycare.. and I forgot what it was, but involved cauliflower and rice. Apparently Ollie did well (and made a mess if his pants are any indicator) and ate about a third of his portion! Which would  be some kind of amazing if the portion size was similar to the day I went. Maybe the teacher was including the floor sacrifice in his eaten? I was so happy to see him, I wasn't too worried about food.

Ollie also had afternoon tea for the first time ever! The teacher said he was a bit grizzly so she thought he might be hungry so she gave him a cruskit and something (the proper afternoon tea wasn't ready yet).

Dinner was a bit of a rush.. we had Fish and Chips. Ollie had some fish and some chips, and a banana biscotti! He was so cute, laughing and smiling. At the end of the meal, we skyped Nelson grandma .

Sunday 24th, Monday 25th April 2011

Hmmm lazy Easter weekend!

Breakfast.. hot cross buns, porridge, pineapple....

Lunch.. Sunday we had spinach and cheese muffins and feijoas. Yummo. Monday we were at Dad's - Ollie had lamb kofta leftovers, biscotti, and pineapple.

Dinner... Dahl on Sunday night - was a hit. Ollie had his with pita bread. And David cooked it perfectly this time! Ollie didn't get dinner on Monday night. We were at Dad's til late (loong story) so by the time he got home, he just had a good milk feed and then bed!

Saturday 23rd April 2010

Breakfast.. hot cross buns! and mini wheats! Lunch... rusks with cream cheese (Farex mixed in) and pineapple.
Can you tell we are having a lazy Easter weekend? Both meals Ollie ate well - sucking the cream cheese of the rusks, and off a spork! Again, loving the pineapple!

Dinner.. lamb kofta cooked by my darling husband (baked not fried) with steamed cauliflower and carrot. Ollie had a great meal, ate lots. More vege than kofta as the meat took a wee while to cool down. At the end of the meal we used the laptop to skype Ollie's grandparents in Nelson so we could show off his eating! He was obviously distracted, but did continue to eat a bit while the laptop was on. It was cool for the grandies to see him munching away!

(Good) Friday 22nd April 2011

Breakfast.. porridge! and pear! Ollie had a good feed, he munched a lot. Into his mouth and pyjamas!

Lunch was AWESOME! Being Good Friday, we were at David's parents. I took Ollie some lunch - fruit, biscotti, and cream cheese. Ollie started off with the pineapple and LOVED it again. He chewed away sucking all the juice out. Then we gave him half a hot cross bun, and he was so cute! He really enjoyed it! We also threw some biscotti into the mix and he had a really good time. Lots of eating, and not really distracted by eating in a noisy room full of people (on the floor on his mat! haha)

I did get a fabric highchair thing, than can go around a chair or person (or a bed for sleeping). I haven't used it yet, I think it will be most useful for cafes and places where we can't sit on the floor.

Dinner was reheated macaroni cheese and steamed vege. Ollie was pretty tired, but he did so well! Well steamed courgette and capsicum are so easy for him to eat, he just sucks/chews the flesh from the skin.

Wednesday 20th April 2011

Breakfast... Mango Pear and Biscotti. (Can you tell I was having a lazy morning?)

Lunch at Grandmas... Mango Pear and Biscotti (sound familar)

Dinner .. fish fingers, capsicum broccoli and green beans. Ollie got stuck into everything even the fish! woo! Maybe because he was glad it wasn't the same as breakfast and lunch?

Thursday 21st April

Another great food day today!

Breakfast was porridge which got everywhere, all over Ollie's pyjamas! He loves smooshing it, but eats a lot too. We also had good ol' pear!

Lunch was interesting! I was out for lunch with friends, so took a few items with me for Ollie. we went to a Satay Noodle House! Ollie started with biscotti and then got REALLY stuck into my satay chicken. I found a decent sized piece of chicken and couldn't get it off him! Was awesome, and a great ad for BLW! I also gave him some noodle, mushroom, but it was allll about the chicken. The rice was too separated for him to pick up. Pretty cool though, he was loving it!

Dinner was all wrong because I forgot to put the crockpot on! So we had macaroni cheese. Ollie got stuck in, and he also had some pear!

I'm so proud of my boy!

Tuesday 19th April 2011

Breakfast today was mini wheats and pear. Ollie didn't eat a huge amount, but had a big milk feed beforehand so probably wasn't too hungry.

Lunch was at childcare, part of the settling process. It was tomatoey pasta (penne) with veges - broccoli and peas. It was VERY distracting for Ollie, with all the other kids eating, but he did OK. Picked up the pasta and broccoli OK, but I don't think much went down. The broccoli was only the small florets, no stalk, so I was pleased he got it OK. He seemed to recognise it, as he loves broccoli. Wasn't cooked til mushy stage, so too crunchy, but he probably got some wee bits. He did chew off at least one piece of pasta though... I saw it in his mouth half an hour later when we were on our way home!! I'll have to ask them to check his cheeks I think...

Dinner was boooring. Chicken with steamed vege. Ollie ignored the chicken, but did eat his vege, mainly the red capsicum and carrot.

Ollie is starting childcare next week. I'm so not ready.

Monday 18th April 2011

I dislike Mondays. David goes back to work, and I can see all the housework I DIDN'T do over the weekend waiting for me. On the upside, Monday is shopping day, which I usually enjoy! Anyway, I digress..

I finally got a proper meal plan sorted for this week! I've deviated from it already, but a good plan does help. Breakfast was avocado on toast, and banana. Good effort by Ollie, into both the toast and the banana! Seemed to eat a lot in comparison to a couple of weeks ago. It is really hard to guage as it ends up in pieces. Perhaps I should try putting his meal back together like a jigsaw piece! haha.

Lunch was a roaring success too. Piklets with cream cheese, and feijoa. This time I cut the feijoa lengthways and ollie was easily able to pick it up and eat it. He LOVED it! He enjoyed sucking the cream cheese off before munching on the piklet. I really can't get over how much he loved the feijoa. None of his usual noises, just "suck suck suck" as he ate it. And of course, the biscotti was a favourite again! I gave it to him after the piklet and feijoa. Ollie talked to it few minutes before eating though... "I'm going to eat you now... and you are going to taste gooooood.... eeegughhaaaaa ba waaa".

I tend to refill Ollie's plate as the pieces get too small, so he has a good selection of food. So, if he runs out of piklet, I'll give him another. I think this has led to him ignoring the smaller pieces, knowing he'll get another "big" bit. Obviously he needs to practice his fine motor skills, so I'm going to make an effort to leave him with the "small" bits. I know he can manage them, they are just a bit trickier.

Dinner went really well too, despite being a bit late. (Ollie and I got stuck out in traffic). Chicken stirfry. Ollie mainly only ate the chicken as it was first on his tray. But I did see him munching on capsicum, courgette, and broccoli. It was the first time I've seen Ollie eat chicken, he normally ignores it. He loooved it! Lots of munching and definitely swallowing! woohoo!

taggy tag

So I was looking at my tags, aka all the food Ollie has eaten/been offered, and I realised that the few days here and there that I've missed posting have meant a few things left out. So this post is purely to add a few tags :)

On the pineapple... Ollie tried that at a coffee group catch up. While it was too hard for him to chew and swallow, he really enjoyed sucking on it and gumming it. It was just a wedge, and he spent a bit of time chewing on the skin too. I bought a pineapple with the fruit and vege this week so we'll give it another go. I'm sure I read somewhere it is good to leave skin on things like pineapple, as it helps them learn which are the edible bits of food.

Sunday 17th April

Breakfast.. porridge again! Made it super chunky again, seems to work best if I use half rice milk and half water. I didn't put grated apple in it this time, we were pushed for time. Ollie didn't seem to notice. We also had the end of our mango.. yum yum! Ollie really loves mango, and if it is nice and ripe, he can eat a fair bit.

Lunch was leftover meatballs and leftover cheese and lentil slice. And Feijoa! He really got into all of it and seemed to eat a fair bit! He liked the feijoa, and sucked out the juicy centre, and spat out the harder edge bit. He needed a bit of help to get it to his mouth though.

Stirfry for dinner. Ollie was so so tired (we really need to address his extreme tiredness at the end of the day! he won't have an afternoon nap, but struggles to make it to bedtime) but he still had a good go at his stirfry, particularly the beef!

All in all, a very successful food day!

Saturday 16th April 2011

Breakfast - thicker porridge (again with grated apple)! Ollie was able to pick up with his hands and eat! We had to rush off to swimming so nothing else for breakfast.

Lunch was cheese and lentil slice. Recipe out of the baby led weaning cookbook, and I'd been meaning to try it for a while. It was sooo yummy! Ollie loved it too. I think I cooked it a little too long, because it was quite crumbly. Might try another egg, and less cooking time next time. We also had mango for lunch... yum yum!

Dinner was meatballs baked in the oven (they were more like meat sticks!) while David and I thought they were yummo.. Ollie was tooo tired by the time they cooled. He did have a good helping of beans, capsicum and broccoli though! There are some leftover, so I think we'll have them for lunch tomorrow.

Friday 15th April 2011

We tried porridge today! Was very messy! But also very fun. I took a photo so it might turn up on the main blog. I think Oliver actually ate a fair bit of porridge! Eating with his fingers didn't work so well, he kept shaking his hand like he had poo stuck to it... So, I tried pre-loading a spoon and giving him that. He took off at that point, (with me helping raise the spoon a bit) but still has some way to go before he can handle a spoon prperly himself. I'll try making porridge thicker next time I think.

Lunch was pretty funny! We had tuna patties (with lemon and thyme). The texture and shape of the patties was perfect and Ollie really enjoyed munching on them. The funny part came when he would just open his mouth and let the chewed bit roll of his tongue. It was as if he all of a sudden didn't like it. But, he'd put the pattie back in his mouth, have another bite... and repeat! He thought it was pretty hilarious. We also had banana biscotti (high iron baby version) and Ollie loved it! I can see that is going to be a regular at lunchtime. (David and I think it is pretty yum too!)

Dinner was tofu sticks and steamed vege. Steamed vege was yum, but I wasn't a fan of the tofu! Apparently you can give it to them raw, but it seemed odd, so I lightly dusted in flour and pan fried. I prefer my tofu in curry. Ollie seemed relatively interested in it, but didn't eat a huge amount as it seemed too firm. There must be another way I can cook it.. perhaps oven bake?

Thursday 14th April 2011

Whoops. Missed a few days again. Where do the days go?? This is why I need an iphone!  I can't even remember what we had for breakfast or lunch today!

Dinner was meatloaf with steamed veges - kumara, broccoli, and carrot. Ollie seemed to eat quite a bit. As usual, loved the broccoli. Veges were really soft so he was easily able to eat heaps. Meatloaf was quite crumbly so it was hard to see how much went down, but there was a heck of a mess to clean up afterward!

One of our current challenges is Ollie "losing" his food down the side of his highchair. We used to lock him in with rolled up towels, but there isn't a need anymore, but his seat gets covered in food. (and so does his clothes!) He likes to put his sippy cup next to him on the seat - that's how much room there is! Not sure how we are going to solve this one.

Monday 11th April 2011

Where is the month going? I'm back at work in three weeks (sob) so Ollie is in daycare two days a week beginning 26th April. Haven't yet worked out how the food thing is going to work. We aren't allowed to take our own food - they have an in house chef. I assume to avoid allergies/sharing issues.

Breakfast.. avocado (mixed with baby rice) on toast, mini wheats, pear. Toast was the top favourite today, Ollie really got into it. Seems to be a bit over the mini wheats, though does give them a go if they are first on the tray and there is a delay in something else. Even pear wasn't as popular as usual. Ollie seemed to eat a fair bit of avocado and toast which was good.

Lunch... piklets... with baby rice for iron. (I eat a lot of baby rice). I spread a wee bit of cream cheese on Ollie's piklets. Not only did he suck the cream cheese off, but I think he actually ate a fair bit of piklet! Also had second half of pear from this morning, but Ollie wasn't really into it.

Dinner.. macaroni cheese. Busy day, Ollie not really interested in eating much. Did enjoy sucking on the pasta.

Sunday 10th April 2011

Great food day today! Daddy did breakfast (mummy had a sleep in!) which was mini wheats and pear. According to David, Oliver ate at least half a mini wheat and a bit of pear (which sounds like nothing, but in the early days of BLW that is pretty good I think!)

Lunch we had at a cafe with his beautiful aunties Kate & Scone. Cheese toastie, rusk with cream cheese, and banana. Banana went pretty much straight on the floor (and I wasn't giving it back). Cream cheese was sucked off rusk (as usual). Toastie was interesting.. I cut it into short soliders and he sucked on them for most of the time we were eating. White bread, so hard to chew up, but bits definitely went down with all the sucking!

Dinner was Lamb Kofta (recipe provided by university study resources). And wow, it was a hit. Kofta straight to mouth, lots of chewing and sucking. Also had steamed kumara, carrot, and broccoli which he really got into, it was nice and mushy so easy for him to pass around his mouth. Definitely got kofta and veges down. He was really funny, cracking up towards the end of the meal, with a beautiful smile on his face.

I've decided to post any pics over on our main blog and just use this as a food diary. Saves posting them twice, and I figure no one actually reads this anyway (except maybe mum).  Main blog here .

Saturday 9th April 2011

Breakfast.. mini wheats and pear! Of course! I'm working on more varied breakfasts!

Lunch was at Nana & Poppa's so we took some french toast and avocado (mixed with baby rice for iron) to have on rusks). Oliver wasn't too distracted (it was just the two of us at the table) but he made quite a mess! Ate lots of avocado and some french toast!

Dinner was pork chops. I was hoping he could hold onto the chop and chew, but the chops I got were the wrong shape for that! Still, he loved the pork, he had a stray bit in his mouth that we was chewing en route to shower. We now have a cheek checkpoint in the shower every night!

We've got proper (but short still) little teeth through now, the two bottom ones. It will be interesting to see how that affects our mealtimes!

Friday 8th April 2011

Dinner tonight was curry! Real curry from the local indian place! We had Malai Kofta and Lamb Korma. The Kofta was too soft and Oliver totally ignored the lamb, but he LOVED pita bread dipped in the Malai Kofta sauce! What a hit! Didn't eat too much, but hopefully next time he'll have a go at the meat too!

Thursday 7th April 2011

Still recovering from our colds here!!

Breakfast, mini wheats and pear. Ollie really getting into pear lately! He loooves it. Its hard to think a few weeks ago it was too slippery to hold!

Lunch... pita pocket with cream cheese (and baby rice mixed in), cucumber. Cucumber is another favourite at the moment (I think it helps with the teeth too!)

Dinner.. Chicken drumsticks, with steamed carrot and broccoli, mashed potato. The chicken was cooked in the crockpot, so really fell off the bone. Ollie had quite a good go, except the mash... He was very very tired.

My super amazing meal plan didn't go so well this week.. our oven  (brand new) has stopped working. Thank god the stove still works. hopefully gets fixed next week!

Sunday 3rd April 2011

Woohoo BREAKFAST! We had mini wheats (best find ever - I must thank the mum that put me on to them!) with rice milk, and pear. Ollie had a really good go at the mini wheat and for the first time ever loved the pear! Normally he just ignores pear, and I was close to giving it up but today he got right into it. It was quite ripe (another tip from the same mum) which I think helped.

Lunch was a bit of a drama.. we went to Grandma and Grandads, but left Ollie's lunch box at home! whoops! We scraped together a banana, plum, and teething rusks with cream cheese. I guess my super iron rich piklets will be good for lunch tomorrow! Ollie really enjoyed his banana and for the first time ever he managed to eat some of the rusk (cream cheese everywhere!) I think the TEETH coming through really helped, as it looked like he was scraping the rusk on his teeth! They aren't really teeth - just little pointy tops of teeth - both bottom ones!

Dinner... meatloaf from last night and steamed capsicum and beans. Ollie was way tired and not into it. I was really hoping he would like meatloaf as his dad loves it!

And just because there has been no Ollie pics on here for a bit....

Saturday 2nd April

We did intend to start breakfast today with Ollie, but that extra 15mins in bed, listening to Ollie chatter to himeself meant it didn't quite happen. Was worth it though! And we went swimming, which was awesome!

The pesky bottom tooth is still working its way through, it doesn't appear to be of any use yet, but is causing our wee boy lots of pain!

Lunch - Blackcurrant mini wheats with a splash of rice milk, carrot muffin, and banana. Was really surprised how well he dealt with the mini wheats! And he hadn't had a carrot muffin for a while (they tend to be messy) and he handled the small pieces really well  - and chewed much better than he used to! Impressed. Banana.. well he was a bit over it by that point, but it was fun to throw around!

Dinner... supposed to be meatloaf.. but our timing was out! Saves cooking tomorrow night I guess!  So, we ended up with pasta, broccoli, capscium, and carrot. Ollie was on form, depsite being really tired. Had a good go at everything. He bites off chunks of everything, and mulls them around his mouth for a while. Some go down, but most go out!

Stop reading now if you don't want to read about poop. Today's nappy showed that we are definitely eating and "processing"more we are getting changes... and of course still lumps of non-processed food. No longer just breastmilk poop that is for sure!

Friday 1st April 2011

Lunch... cream cheese with baby rice, using capsicum, carrot -raw, cucumber, pita pocket as dippers.
Dinner ... cottage pie with steamed kumara and carrot. Didn't get into the cottage pie - a bit difficult I think. If we keep offering eventually he'll be able to pick it up! :) Or use cutlery!

Ollie had a few days where he didn't eat so much.. but we have a tooth coming! It has started to cut, which has made for a very unhappy boy. I need to remind myself it isn't about the volume and is quite normal to have a few off days!  I've done a meal plan that loosely includes lunch and breakfast to try and make me more organised so we don't have toast everyday! I've got lots of muffin recipes so we'll see how it goes.

He has definitely come along with his fine motor skills! Not quite managing the pincer grip, but getting there - using two fingers and thumb to pick up smaller bits of food.

Whoopsie

So it seems I lost a few days! Whoopsie. No surprise really, I tend to get a bit slack. Have tagged some things we've been eating, but not everything. I should probably write stuff down so I remember it if I'm late posting! I think it will be really interesting (for me, if no one else) to look back on this and see how Ollie's eating evolved.

Things are going well, I've had a few moments of "ohmygosh Ollie isn't eating enough". Mainly when I see other babies eating five icecubes (!)worth of food. Then, I remember why we are doing this and I'm all good. Ollie definitely has days where he isn't interested at all, sometimes due to crappy timing. Dinner seems to be his best meal, as I'm a bit disorganised at lunch, or we are out and he is very distracted.

I'm thinking about starting to do breakfast too, and really embrace Ollie eating with me at every meal. We'll see how it goes...

Saturday 26th March 2011

We had a strange day today!

Lunch was steamed veges, pate on rusks, and a wee bit of my fish (Scone and I had fish and chips!). Still not a fan of the fish. Straight into the pate though! Kumara was a bit firm, but he had a good go along with a good munch on the capsicum. Didn't eat that much, (other than pate) but it was pretty exciting having Aunty Scone with us.
Dinner was supposed to be dahl, but David had some kind of disaster in the kitchen. I'm going to try and revive the dahl as soup tonight. So we ended up having pasta and steamed vege! What a boring dinner! Broccoli got mushed, and nothing really eaten! He didn't eat any pasta, despite loving it the last few times. He did munch on the red capsicum but nothing went down I don't think. Too busy looking at his pretty Aunty Scone I think.

Friday 25th March 2011

Hmm I seem to have lost Thursday! Whoops!

Well today we had eggy bread for lunch at a cafe with our music group. Ollie was as usual distracted by the cafe environment but did seem to eat some!

Dinner was steamed veges and FISH FINGERS! Ollie was not a fan of the fish. He peeled the crust off, ate some of that and consistently threw the fish overboard! (hehe!). We'll try it again some time. He did have a good munch of the veges though.

Wednesday 23rd March 2011

No lunch!

Dinner.. stirfry! I wasn't my organised alter ego today so didn't have dinner ready to eat! This stirfry was yummy for us... but a bit too crunchy for Ollie - didn't let it cook for long enough. I think I'll try steaming his stirfry pieces while ours is in the wok - that way we can have crunchy and he can have squishable!

Tuesday 22nd March

Supposed to have lunch with a friend in town today, but I got my days mixed up and didn't go! Whoops! Cheese on toast, nectarine and cucumber for lunch today. I think Ollie has really sore teeth today and he was getting pretty grumpy at his food! He really seemed to enjoy sucking on the nectarine, which was the first time he has shown an interest I think. It was a bit firm, so I didn't really expect him to eat it. I think some toast was consumed! His drink bottle is definitely his favourite thing, and he ignores food if that is on his tray. I usually wait for him to throw it overboard and then leave it there.  He seems to enjoy rubbing it on his teeth.

Dinner was meatloaf (recipe from the baby led weaning book) and steamed broccoli, and corn on the cob! Ollie not really into dinner at all tonight, don't think he ate anything - spent all of dinnertime throwing food and laughing. Oh well, David loved the meatloaf!

Monday 21st March

Pasta with cream cheese for lunch today, along with cucumber wedges cold from the fridge. Cucumber was a hit! Not sure he bit any off, but he really enjoyed sucking on it. I think he has pretty sore teeth!

Dinner was pork steak with steamed cauli, kumara, and capsicum.  He had a good go at the pork, and showed the most interest in the capsicum than he ever has - chewing on it for a while. Kumara was a bit over cooked, so very mushy and just got mashed around. He is still biting off huge chunks, like tonight with the pork, and he doesn't have the molars to grind it up in his mouth!

sunday 20th March

Another busy day today! We didn't get to bed til 2am after traveling back from Martinborough! So another slow morning! Ollie was obviously feeling the effects as he let us sleep in! We had a BBQ at a friends for lunch which we didn't make in time for food, and then dinner at our (Davids) parents. Yummy roast turkey! Ollie proved once again that he doesn't like pumpkin or red kumara (which tastes like pumpkin!) Preferring the turkey, or the white kumara. He didn't eat a huge amount and gagged on a piece of turkey that was rather too large! We seem to have an issue with Ollie biting off HUGE chunks and then gagging. I guess he'll learn, as we can't really stop him! Ollie was pretty distracted by the different enviroment but I'm trying to get him used to different enviroments so he doesn't have trouble eating when we are out. And of course it is nice for Ollie to eat with his grandparents!

Saturday 19th March

We had a wedding in Martinborough today (was awesome) but a lazy start to the day meant we were rather rushed for time! I'd hoped to prepare a decent lunchbox for Ollie as I knew the wedding dinner wouldn't be suitable. Well, that didn't happen! I took cream cheese, some rusks, banana, and apricot. We had lunch in the car while Ollie was zonked out, and by the time dinnertime arrived, he was a bit over it. He did enjoy the teething rusks - so I will give him those again, but he just sucked on them - too hard for him to munch. He enjoyed the cream cheese off the rusks, and had a wee go at his banana. Apricot just got flung around. We didn't take a mat to put under him and while they did provide a highchair, I was conscious of spreading food into the carpet! He was the only baby there (bar the bride&groom's five week old!)

So, I'm looking for ideas of stuff I can throw together quickly when I'm disorganised! Oh to be super organised all the time. I'm also looking for some kind of suction cup plate (not bowl) that can sit on the table and he can reach but not pull off... maybe I'll just get a plastic bowl that can't hurt him when he inevitably smacks himself on the head...

Friday 18th March

Lunch was on the go - Ollie had a bit of my bagel with cream cheese on it. He really enjoyed chewing and sucking on the bagel, but I think bagels have a fair amount of salt, so probably not a regular food!

David was out for dinner, so Ollie and I had polenta with steamed broccoli and kumara. I didn't grill the polenta slices long enough so they fell apart and Ollie had trouble holding them. Made them with chicken stock I made myself and bought stuff has too much salt. It was pretty bland, I added salt and pepper to mine! Ollie not really into it -more interested in his water bottle!

Thursday 17th March

Lunch... banana,  pear, and cheese on toast. Ollie still not really interested in pear... I might stew some up. Really good munch on the banana today. I left half the skin on, and he knew which end to pick it up straightaway. Still got very slippery.. mainly I think to the drool coming out his mouth and getting everywere!

Dinner... Chickpea patties, steamed broccolli, and kumara. Woohoo pattie success! I was starting to think Ollie was anti food in the shape of patties (after no interest in chickpea, lamb, or beef patties!).

We've realised it takes Ollie a bit longer to get into the meal, and often we are nearly done before anything makes it to his mouth. I think I'll try putting him in his highchair a bit earlier so he can understand what is happening.

Also - sippy cup success! He can drink out of it all by himself. Of course, he often spits it out straight after, but still!?!

No poop for a few days, I'm worried about potential explosion....

Wednesday 16th March

Lunch... carrot muffin, pate on toast, banana. Ollie still loves pate! He seemed to eat a good chunk today, yet it was different to last time he had it. Before it seemed almost an accident if he swallowed some, but today he was purposefully moving it around his mouth and swallowing!. Banana seemed quite slippery for him today, it was a bit green still I think.

Dinner.. random chicken casserole that I threw together very quickly... with chicken, apricot, broccoli, cauliflower and carrot. Ollie not so into it - had a munch on some carrot and broccoli but only after I pointed them out. (Which I try not to do in the spirit of not intervening...) Until then, he just blew raspberries at David and giggled. hah! Totally ignored the chicken, though I have to admit, far from my best work!

Tuesday 15th March

Lunch... banana, carrot muffin in town... Ollie was a bit distracted - given we were sitting on Lambton Quay - but he had a really good go at the muffin! ( I had sushi....)

Dinner... Stirfry! Ollie ate more courgette than he has ever! And did find the meat eventually. He has taken to eating his broccoli stalk end first... (then I realised that is how I eat it....) And of course carrot is always a winner. I don't think Ollie ate too much tonight, because he was having too much fun playing with... noodles! David and I often have noodles in our stirfry so tonight we gave Ollie some. He had a ball! (and a few noodles made their way into his mouth - miraculously!) He spent a lot of time holding a handful of long noodles up and swinging them. Rather messy, but oh so fun!

Monday 14th March

Lunch was last night's roast dinner! Chicken and roast veges. Ollie wasn't really interested in the chicken at all, but really enjoyed the kumara - munching and swallowing quite a bit! It was amazing to watch him move the food around his mouth and then intentionally swallow it. Pretty cool!

Dinner was pork steak with steamed green beans and broccoli, and mashed potato. Ollie wasn't too interested, but he had a really good go at the pork - actually biting chunks off, chewing and swallowing. Definitely a meat eater, our boy.

We are still having the problem of Ollie throwing himself backwards during food time, which is unsafe, and can cause him to gag. I'm not sure how to solve the problem!

Timing is also a challenge, though I think this is probably less of a BabyLed issue, and more about introducing food of any kind. It is definitely harder when David is home (hopefully he doesn't get offended by that... though I don't thinks he even reads this... or anyone for that matter) because during the week, Ollie and I have a different rhythm.

Saturday & Sunday 12th & 13th March..

Two days of no food for Ollie. I feel really crap about it, but the weekend just turned to custard. I rushed David to A&E on Saturday morning and we spent all day, until well after dinner time at the hospital. We didn't eat - so neither did Ollie!

Sunday was just a mess... bad timing for lunch after lunch, and then our roast dinner didn't cook because the oven kept turning itself off! In the end Ollie was just too tired.

Now that he is actually eating, he will be starting to get calories etc from food, so we need to make sure we offer it everyday! It has taught me that we need to make sure we have some quick food ready if our plans turn to mush.

Friday 11th March

We had lunch today at a cafe, so quite distracting for Ollie. Carrot muffin and half banana. Didn't eat much but showed off his banana holding skills... and his throw-carrot-muffin everywhere skills!

Dinner was macaroni cheese! Ollie had some, but also some plain pasta so he didn't have too much cheese. He loved it! Took huge mouthfuls of pasta even!

Thursday 10th March

Great food day today!! Another beautiful day in Wellington - I'm not looking forward to winter! We had lunch again in the park today with a different coffee group. Ollie had banana and baby corn, and ate a wee bit - had quite a good meal considering there were four other babies and mummies there.

Dinner was a bit random, we thought we were having dinner with a friend but sadly that fell through so we just threw something together. Pasta, steamed kumara, broccoli, capscium, and a carrot muffin! I made the muffins today (sugar free of course) from the Baby Led Weaning cookbook. I definitely recommend the cookbook - great for getting baby led ideas! I think tonight was our most successful dinner yet! Ollie had a really good go at everything! He loved it all! He took a HUGE bite of his muffin and definitely chowed down some kumara. And the pasta was a total hit. I used a mix of small and large spiral pasta (cold) so it kind of clumped together. He had no trouble picking up handfuls! His finger skills have come so far!

We also had an interesting nappy today.... *warning poop conversation follows*

We are definitely consuming food now... today's nappy confirmed Ollie can eat quite a lot! It had been a couple of days since his last nappy and I was dreading it! There was a lot of it - all kinds of chunks, plus some obviously digested food! I think the banana may have blocked him up a bit, but he didn't seem to have too much trouble! I saw definite bit of meat, baby corn, and banana! Go Ollie!

I also have to confess to googling the interesting sight in his nappy which turned out to be related to banana...... *blurgh*

Wednesday 9th March

Lunch was at the park today with our coffee group. It was a bit distracting for Ollie, but he did have a munch on his baby corn, and a wee bit on his banana. He is getting better with his sippy cup, (which I only introduced yesterday!) though I'm not sure he is too keen on water just yet! He always looks a bit surprised when it comes out! Ollie had a wee gag while we at the park, and it was interesting watching a couple of people's faces! Nothing like the almost-scary gags we get at home!

Dinner was beef casserole cooked in the crockpot with steamed green beans. Ollie was pretty tired, but still had a good chew on his beef and also the broccoli! He has taken to chewing the stalk end of broccoli, which is strange given he used to always suck on the floret bit. He got a bit screamy in his highchair tonight, but I think that was a combination of tired/teeth because he did get back to his eating....

Tuesday 8th March

Despite the teething monster still visiting, we had a really good day BLW-wise toda!

Lunch - bean salad, cucumber... and I can't remember what else! He really got into the cucumber, more than he ever has. I think it was because it was really cold - straight from the fridge.

Dinner - Stirfry.David and my favourite dinner, and it seems Ollie's too! First time we'd tried baby corn - and it was a hit!

Monday 7th March

We officially have a teethy grumpy monster in our house!

Lunch - raw carrot, pate, nectarine. He sucked the pate of the carrot, and seemed to really enjoy it, but that was about it - we didn't even get to the pear and cucumber!

Dinner - spicy lamb patties, steamed broccoli and carrot. Ollie had a good go at the broccoli, but wasn't too interested in the pattie! Disappointing! It was really good to see him pick up a smallish bit of broccoli - with no stalk and put that in his mouth though. He couldn't have done that two weeks ago. The patties were from the Baby Led Weaning Cookbook, which has some great recipe ideas in it.

We've had a rough few days, I think mainly due to Ollie's teeth and our lack of good timing.  It seems he has almost regressed in his interest in food, but I think that is partly the "harder" foods we are giving. I will make sure we have at least one easy finger food every meal, but also add on an interesting new part too.

*repeat to myself - it is not about how much he eats. It is fine if he isn't too interested some days*

Sunday 6th March

For lunch today, we were out at family's house. Ollie was still sleeping when everyone else ate, which was a pity - I think he would have really enjoyed eating with everyone. Ollie and I had some food when he woke up, and he had a wee munch, but was too distracted! Peas, roast pork, roast chicken, kumara, pumpkin, and potato.

We were also home a bit late for dinner, we had beef patties, mash pot, steamed cauli. Ollie wasn't hugely interested in eating, but did play with it a bit.

Saturday 5th March

Another crappy day! No lunch – timing all wrong, Ollie got tired. I was out a lot of the day and David isn't used to giving him food during the day. He did have really good milk feeds though as he had to wait longer than usual. Dinner also went pearshaped with bad timing, we were still cooking and Ollie was very tired, so we put him to bed! Tomorrow is a new day!

Friday 4th March

Argh what a day!

Lunch timing all crap – out and I forgot his lunchbox. I got a chicken salad for lunch thinking he could share, but pieces too small. He did play with wome lettuce
Dinner – toast two ways. Pizza toast and French toast. Ollie played with his food, but didn’t eat. I was solo parenting as David was out!

Day Thirteen - Thurday 3rd March 2011

Things are going really well with our new approach. Ollie has lunch with me every day, and dinner with daddy and mummy. Sometimes he eats nothing, sometimes he eats a little. Depends on the food and his mood.

Lunch today was pate on toast (mummy gag! smelt like catfood!). Ollie LOVED the pate! Photographic evidence:

We also had pear and avocado (mummy had crackers and cream cheese too!) but they didn't get a look in! Ollie was really chewing the toast, and sucking off the pate! He got quite excited (as you can tell by the amount of pate on his face). A fair bit of gagging, but he easily dealt with it, and straight back to eating. He did briefly suck on the avocado (when the toast was all gone) but no real interest.

Dinner! Chickpea (& Butterbean 'cause I opened the wrong can!) Patties and steamed cauliflower. Mummy and Daddy thought they were yum, but Ollie was tired so didn't really give anything a go. We were running late home so dinner was half an hour later than it should have been!

Whoop - finally up to date in publishing all of these!

Day Twelve - Wed 2nd March

Lunch: Leftover steak, carrot and brocolli. He again enjoyed his steak, but also got into the carrot, brocolli, and courgette today.  Chewing on it all! He especially like the broccoli today, biting off a huge hunk and chewing around his mouth for aaages! Also the carrot, he was actually biting off huge chunks and chewing them around his mouth! (I'll be looking out for carrot in upcoming nappies.....!)

it doesn't all quite fit in my mouth...

Dinner: We are getting more adventurous.... I have Guides on a Wednesday night, so in order for Ollie to have dinner with us, I need to be super organised. Today I made a green curry casserole in the crockpot. Beef steak, green curry paste, coconut milk, tomatoes, tomato puree, courgette, broccoli, carrot... and capsicum. I think thats it! Made in a bit of a hurry as Ollie decided he was STARVING and needed a feed as I was in the middle of it. Ollie seemed to really like it, and had a go at all of it. By the end of the meal, he was covered in curry sauce! Straight into the shower after dinner!

Such a successful day!

Day Eleven - Tuesday 1st March

Lunch: Banana and Pear. Ollie didn't really ingest anything much today, but I was so impressed with how his food handling skills have improved! A week or so ago, he couldn't hold onto banana and eat it, even in the skin. It got too slippery, or the unpeeled end fell off. Similar with pear - very slippery! Today, he picked up his banana and put in in his mouth! We are also starting to see more chewing action, as well as the sucking! He also picked up his pear and sucked on that quite competently! It is amazing, in less than two weeks, just how much more capable he is.

Dinner: STEAK! With steamed broccoli, courgette, and carrot. I thought he did well with the beef strips in the stirfry last night, but wow did he enjoy the steak! We cooked a mini size beef steak to well done, and then cut into Ollie size strips! He really got into it - almost attacking it. Ripping it up, chewing it around his mouth, and sucking out the juices. The poor veges weren't getting a look in!

Day Ten - Monday 28th February 2011

So I've been reading the "Baby Led Weaning" book by Gill Rapley - and the approach is quite different to the one proposed by the study we're participating. The book suggests including baby in family life from the get go, and including them in every meal. So on that note, we've changed Ollie's bedtime routine, and our dinner time to include him at dinner!

For lunch we had broccoli, kumara, pear, nectarine, cooked carrot, and raw carrot with hummus. The carrot was a good dipping tool, but he wasn't keen on the hummus! I wish I'd captured his face!

At dinner, we had our usual meal of stirfry (will have to vary things up a bit now that Ollie is joining us). Ollie had broccoli, carrot, and strips of beef. He loved being at the dinner table with us, and LOVED the beef! He really got into it, and didn't really given anything else a second chance!

Whoops a bit behind in posting these!

Sunday 27th Feb 2011

No food today - Ollie out of sorts and not feeding properly. Stupid teeth.

Day Nine - Saturday 26th Feb 2011

what is this strange food....
Not so into the food today, but as usual very excited to be in the highchair. Perhaps I should give him time in the highchair without food.... or maybe that would confuse him!?

Grandma & Grandad were here today for foodtime, it was cool for them to see Ollie in his highchair with real food. Tried to give him a banana today, but he was too rough with it, and it and it broke up, so it didn't have a "handle" anynore (handle = skin left on at the bottom). He did get the banana in his mouth briefly, but no munching that I saw. Will definitely try banana again though. He had nectarine though, and did suck on that for a wee while (skin left on as a handle!)

Toast was surprisingly not a huge favourite today (but still probably more than anything else) - again I think he was a little distracted. Gave Ollie a spoon to play with, with mashed avocado on it, he quite liked it as I think it has the same attraction as toast but doesn't get soggy! Only downside is the scoop bit of the spoon is long (designed for puree feeding!) so he kept gagging on it as he shoved it too far into his mouth.

notice - toast still firmly held in his left hand...

I have made hummus and pate (I cannot begin to describe how gross it was making the pate!!) so I will introduce those this week and plus some other "real" food that I can eat with him! Will post recipes at some stage.

Day Eight - Friday 25th Feb 2011

Had lunch in town with a friend today, and ended up in town allll day. Ollie had toast and cream cheese, which he enjoyed as usual! He did gag and vomit again! I'm sure it is because he throws himself backwards in excitement. He was on my knee, and I just couldn't keep him still. He did continue to munch on his toast after the vomit (well caught by me with his bib I might add..) but then he started throwing it around.....

We did intend to give him steak tonight at the BBQ we went to, but he didn't have an afternoon nap so he was mega overtired and didn't get to sleep until late, so I just didn't think it was the right time! I am looking forward to giving him meat though!

Day Seven - Thursday 24th Feb 2011

Had a coffee group today, so offered ollie some toast, cream cheese, and avocado while we were picnicking at the park. He wasn't really interested - too many exciting things to look at (aka other babies!!). I did intend to offer some more food later, but it just didn't happen! Still really upset about the earthquake.....

I did have a chat with another mum in my coffee group who has also signed up for the university study. We should be able to share tips!

Day six - Wednesday 23rd Feb 2011

Feeling a little shellshocked and really upset about the earthquake. Ollie didn't eat a huge amount.. I didn't introduce anything new. He, as always, had fun smooshing it up.

Day Five - Tuesday 22nd February - 11am & 2pm

Well we tried solids twice today!! Ollie still teething and not so interested. Don't think he really ingested anything today - and mainly only interested in toast! Fruit was too slippery and I just don't think he was in the mood today. Broccoli will be good I think - the stalk is a fantastic handle. I don't think he is a big fan of the taste though! haha. He did enjoy mashing it about though.

We took the foot rest off his highchair to try and get him to sit still a bit more, but no luck, he just swings his legs around!

I have to keep reminding myself he isn't meant to eat anything much yet! Its all about the playing....

Day Four - Monday 21st February - 4:30pm

Weird day here. Ollie is teething and has had whacked up sleep times. Toast is the favourite. Today we had avocado and cream cheese with toast, both went down well, often he had both in his mouth. Didn't seem to really ingest much, bit of toast. Still banging like a madman with his right hand, and pushing off the footrest. Think I'll take it off...

Tried cucumber, seemed to be too slippery, even with some skin left on as a handle.  He did gag on a bit of toast, but thankfully no vomit this time.

Food time ended with a suddenly overtired baby - into bed! Trying to find the "right" time to give him solids so I might try a more purist approach and just give him food whenever he seems interested....
Monday 21st February - 7am

Evidence of toast, avocado, and kumara contained in poop! Hoorah!
Day Three - Sunday 20th February - 3pm

Toast was a roaring success! I made crunchy toast fingers in the oven - they were really hard which gave Ollie a good handle! I spread avocado on the toast and he sucked it off, and also bit into the toast as it got softer. It was as messy as day one! Ollie was very happy the whole time and loved having Daddy home. Ollie's right hand banged the high chair (in time with his feet!) and his left hand held the food. We may have a lefty! Ollie bounced most of the time - pushing off with his feet up and down. This wasn't so helpful to avoid gagging, as it meant the toast finger got shoved further into his mouth!

Ollie did have a couple of gagging sessions on a piece of toast too big, which resulted in vomit! It was surprising how many chunks of food (mainly toast) were regurgitated! He was clearly swallowing! I think we might have had solids too soon after mama milk because there was a fair bit of milk too! (Though, he has vomited a lot over the last few days... I'm hoping it is just the teething!)

Ollie preferred to pick the food up himself rather than us hand it to him. He had fingers of toast with avocado, fingers of purple kumara, and a slice of avocado. He was much more receptive to food this time, picking up the kumara finger before I'd even put the toast on his highchair. I got some photos of his great facials, but sadly my camera is just not fast enough and there was too much blur. I also got a video of the first gag (and vomit) but I'm not really sure people want to see that....

messy boy! note the green sleeves!!

Learnings:
* Roll up sleeves of white bodysuit before applying avocado to baby
* Purple kumara is far superior to orange
* Wait longer after breastmilk before solids...

Day Three - Saturday 19th Feb 2011
No food today :( Oliver is not a happy camper! He has some serious teething action going on and I struggled to even breastfeed him without him getting upset, so I didn't even try food! Tomorrow is a new day.....
Day Two - Friday 18th Feb 2011 - 11:45am
Ollie was much less interested in his food today. I gave him orange kumara and avocado again, and had intended to try toast fingers, but he wasn't really interested. I think I waited too long (40min after breastfeed - should have been more like 20). He did purposefully pick up a piece of kumara and take it to his mouth, resulting in a chunk sticking to his lip, but otherwise distinterested. It ended in a bit of a meltdown and I quickly realised he was tired, so off to bed!
I have been reading online that a less structured approach is good - rather than one set meal a day - offer them when you eat! Might give him another go this afternoon....
 Day One - Thursday 17th Feb 2011- 2:30pm
Food is fun, til you're one! That seems to be the motto of baby led purists and I can see why. Today was our first day of "real" food! On the menu was orange kumara (steamed), and a wee bit of avocado. I don't know that Ollie actually ingested anything, but he had a LOT of fun smooshing (and banging on his highchair!). Ollie normally puts things to his mouth very quickly, but he didn't seem to be in the mood to at food time. I think this was partly because I made the kumara too soft and it squished when he tried to pick it up. (Or it could have been his superbaby strength?). He did seem to suck a little off his/my fingers towards the end, and pulled a funny face (camera too slow to capture) but not his "sour" face that he gets when it is something that he doesn't like! I then saw some sucky/tongue actions... so maybe it was swallowed! By the end, his hands were coated and he had a bit of a food moustache. He was VERY VERY happy the whole time, and thought it was hilarious when I washed his hands with a flannel at the end. I also spoke to our contact at the university today, who gave me a few tips!

Things I learnt/need to do:
* Buy a tarp to go under highchair (to protect carpet and allow food retreival)
* Cook kumara a little less to give him a better grip
* Try crusty toast with spread - better handle
* Make some pate and hummus
* buy some kind of sippy cup so Ollie can experiment with water
Rock on tomorrow!
